  4. The cons of composite decking are that it’s: expensive, it retains heat making it hot to walk on after a summer’s day, it’s rigid so doesn’t suit curved decks and certain substances can stain the decking like grease or oil.

Pine Decking

  2. Pine decking is a treated softwood derived from various species of pine trees.
  3. The pros of pine decking are that its: cost effective, it has a natural wood appearance, it’s readily available in New Zealand, it’s resistant to decay as its H3.2 treated.
  4. The cons of pine decking are that’s its: high maintenance, limited colour options, its more susceptible to warping and cracking over time as it dries and retains water very rapidly compared to other materials.

Hardwood Decking

  1. $80 – 100 per square meter.

  2. Hardwoods such as Kwila, Virtex, Garapa and Purpleheart are often used for decking.

  3. The pros of hardwood decking are that it’s: very durable due to its density, it has a naturally beautiful colour, it’s low maintenance and is environmentally friendly.

  4. The cons of hardwood decking are that it’s: expensive, harder to work with due to its density, require regular maintenance and has a limited availability for larger decks.
